Our Rotary Club has been organising a Charity Golf Day every May since 2003 at the Verulam Golf Club, "The Home of the Ryder Cup", St Albans. Sam Ryder, a local seedsman, was a past Captain and also a Mayor of the City. He visited America with his own professional golf coach and from his first visit the Ryder Cup was born.
Verulam Golf Club allows our Club the courtesy of the course and an average of a 100 golfers tee off in teams of four in a stableford competition to enjoy the splendours of the course. The day commences with the traditional " Bacon Rolls" and coffee breakfast. Once the golf is completed participants receive a splendid lunch in the lounge or patio, this is followed by prize giving, raffle, and presentation of a cheque to the chosen charity.
Over the years some £65,000 has been raised by the generosity of the golfers, many who have raised teams and played every year, creating a great atmosphere and a day not to be missed. Among the Charities which have been supported are:
Our 2018 event raise £5100 for Rennie Grove Hospice Care.
